DAMAGED DELIVERIES COST MORE THAN YOU THINK — HERE'S HOW TO PREVENT THEM

We’ve all experienced that letdown: the package finally arrives… and it’s broken. For consumers, it’s frustrating. For businesses, it can be catastrophic.

Whether you’re waiting on high-value components, sensitive medical equipment, or essential goods for a client, a damaged delivery doesn’t just waste time - it erodes trust. At Jet Delivery, we know protecting cargo is about more than securement. It’s about protecting timelines, reputations, and relationships.

Here’s how we make sure every load arrives intact - and how you can, too.

Securing Cargo in a Pickup Truck Bed

Pickup trucks are a common and versatile delivery solution, especially for shorter runs or locations with limited access. But without the right tie-down strategy, even a quick trip can go wrong.

Ratchet straps are the preferred option over rope for several reasons:

  • No knots required (hooks on both ends)

  • Maintains tension during transport

  • Available in various lengths and weight capacities

Load heavier items first and distribute weight evenly. Use multiple straps from different angles, and consider a cargo net or weather-resistant cover to help prevent movement and protect against the elements.

Securing Freight on Open Utility Trailers

For expedited freight or open utility trailers, securement is critical. These trailers are often used for urgent business shipments and require additional precautions.

Use straps in an “X” pattern over the center of the load to limit lateral movement. Reinforce the perimeter with additional tie-downs. A durable tarp can help shield cargo from weather and debris, and bungee cords should be used to tightly secure any loose ends of the tarp to prevent flapping.

Always inspect the load after the first 25 miles of transit. This is when most initial shifts occur due to acceleration, stops, and turns. Continue to recheck the load at every stop.

Flatbed Freight Securement

Flatbed freight has no side or top containment, so securement is everything. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) require specific types and numbers of tie-downs based on the size and weight of the freight.

Key best practices:

  • Use straps, chains, or ropes rated for the load, and inspect for wear before use

  • Confirm tarps are intact, with all grommets firmly attached

  • Minimize wind pockets by securing tarps tightly against the load and trailer

Over-securing is better than under-securing. A few extra minutes of preparation can prevent costly delays and cargo damage.

Managing Overhang and Flag Requirements

When cargo extends beyond the vehicle, safety laws come into play. Federal guidelines allow up to 3 feet of front overhang, 4 feet in the rear, and 4 inches on either side before additional warning devices are required.

If your load exceeds those limits, it must be marked with:

  • Red or orange warning flags at least 18 inches square, placed at the outermost points

  • Red marker lamps and reflectors for nighttime or low-visibility conditions

In some areas, additional permits or escort vehicles may be required depending on the route or type of freight.

This is where Jet Delivery’s experience comes into play.

We don’t leave compliance up to guesswork. Our systems allow you to enter cargo dimensions and instantly receive a vehicle recommendation. But sometimes, especially with unique freight, talking to a person makes all the difference.

Our Customer Service, Dispatch, and Brokerage teams take the time to ask the right questions, understand the scope of your shipment, and assign the properly equipped vehicle from the start. Whether you need a longer flatbed, rear overhang flags, or special routing considerations, we help make sure your freight is prepared for a safe and legal trip.

Oversized Loads Require Smart Planning

Transporting oversized freight requires more than just extra space — it requires coordination.

Jet Delivery’s approach includes:

  • Matching the right vehicle type to the dimensions and weight of the cargo

  • Mapping safe and legal routes to avoid low bridges, tight turns, or road restrictions

  • Using the proper equipment for load stabilization, such as blocks, straps, and braces

  • Checking the load after the first few miles and at every stop

With experience across a wide range of industries and freight types, our team helps ensure every detail is covered.

Why It All Comes Back to Safety

Securing freight correctly protects more than the shipment itself. It safeguards drivers, other motorists, your equipment, and your reputation.

At Jet Delivery, driver safety is a core value. We train our teams to meet or exceed DOT requirements, maintain proper securement tools, and follow clear checklists for load inspections and trip readiness.

When your shipment arrives intact, on time, and without incident, we’ve done our job right.
